Ministry Opportunities

Connecting in New York City is hard--even in a small church like Emmanuel. One very good way to do so is to commit yourself to one or more of the ministries of the church. Here are a few of the ways to connect.

Sunday Ops -
Time Commitment: 1 Sunday/month or less
A great and simple way to serve the church and meet others in the congregation is to help out with Sunday Ops. Sunday Operations at Emmanuel helps ensure that all of the basic components of the worship service function smoothly -- the nuts and bolts of using a rented space for our Sunday worship. Commitments can range from fifteen minutes of light work to helping during the whole service. You can commit to one Sunday a month to help out, or we can fit you in on a more flexible schedule. If you are at all interested in setting up or arranging chairs, preparing or cleaning up the communion elements, or any other details of Operations, please contact Kathy Strickman. Thank you!

Ushering -
Time Commitment: flexible, generally 1 Sunday/month (15 min. before service through the end)
Ushering at Emmanuel is an important and rewarding service to our church. Ushers demonstrate warmth and welcome as they greet the church's attenders, particularly those who may be new to the church, and to invite them into the spirit and space of worship. We want to be sure to provide a welcoming atmosphere to those who may not be a regular part of our church community. Thanks for considering this vital part of our church's work. Sound Crew -
Time Commitment: 1-2 hrs. per month
Sound setup is a crucial part of Sunday operations. Without it, praise songs and teaching would not be heard! Responsibilities include:
• Working in teams of two, typically one rotation per month
• 30 min. setup of sound equipment before service
• Control of sound board during praise time and sermon.
• 15 min. breakdown of sound equipment after service
Training will be provided until you feel comfortable with the equipment. It is fun for audiophiles and non-techies alike; no previous experience required – it is always satisfying to learn something new! A great way to get to know someone as you bond over wrapping up cables or fiddling with the volume controls, and also a good fit for couples who wish to grow together by serving together as a team.

Projector Crew -
Time Commitment: Once a month, 30-40 minutes before service, and during service.
Join this crew who work behind the scenes to set up and run the projector. Utilization of the projector has become an integral part of the service used for both praise, responsive readings, and now the sermon. We only ask that you volunteer about once a month. All trained and untrained are welcome.

Refreshments Ministry -
Time commitment: 10-15 min before and after service, once every 2 months.
Volunteers help to set up refreshments on the table, and clean up after service. Duties entail carrying coffee urns and plastic trays back to Olive Tree Deli (across the street) after service.
Refreshments Ministry is more than just schlepping snacks, and cleaning up bagel and muffin crumbs, it helps to facilitate fellowship and conversations that happen after church service- while people munch on bagels, sip coffee, or while parents get to have that much needed catch-up time with friends while their children busy themselves with what flavor muffin to eat. Refreshment Ministry is a great way to get involved at Emmanuel- with a minimum time commitment. It is also an excellent way to serve the Emmanuel community.

Meals Ministry -
Volunteers in our congregation cook, send or deliver food to new moms and their families to help in their first month of adjustment. Contact Garnette to volunteer or if you are a new mom.

Roots in the Heights

Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. (Jeremiah 29:7)
